Archaeological Principal Investigators

Full-Time NM / Full-Time WY

Grouse Mountain Environmental Consultants are seeking two full-time archaeological Principal Investigators to join our team with one opening in Wyoming and the other in New Mexico. As part of our team, you will work closely with our clients in the oil and gas industry, renewable energy industry, and state and federal agencies across the western United States. The ideal candidate for each position will have strong time management skills, maintain a professional demeanor, adhere to contract timelines and budgets, and interact productively with other Grouse Mountain team members to meet deadlines and team goals. These positions may require occasional out-of-office fieldwork but also offer the opportunity to participate in widely varied investigations across ecological compliance fields. We are seeking candidates that are interested in personal and professional growth in a fast paced, dynamic, setting with like-minded team members.

Salary:
$85,000-$120,000 annually.  Grouse Mountain reserves the right to offer outside the stated range-based on experience, education, and other qualifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Interact with Grouse Mountain Project Managers, Program Leads, and project proponents to ensure project needs are being met and cultural resource applications are understood.
  • Coordinate and develop/manage/track project scopes, budgets, and schedules.
  • Work independently and resolve project challenges with minimal supervision.
  • Direct junior staff and work closely with fellow employees; communicate effectively in both written and oral formats.
  • Develop, direct, and participate in all types of archaeological investigations which may include:
    • Conducting and managing Class I, II, and III archaeological inventories and other assigned projects
    • Creating research designs, work plans, lead, conducting and overseeing fieldwork for pedestrian survey, shovel testing, site testing, construction monitoring projects, and overseeing data collection and compilation
    • Preparing, reviewing, and editing cultural resource reports, cultural property forms, and eligibility evaluations regarding NRHP criteria including aspects of integrity. and treatments of project effects to cultural resources.

Qualifications & Expereince (Minimum Requirements):

  • Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field (must meet Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation).
  • At least five years in Cultural Resource Management, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity, whether in the field or in the office.
  • Report authorship and experience providing quality control review of field documents and reports produced by staff.
  • Experience with computer-based programs such as ArcGIS Pro, Microsoft Office Suite, OneNote, and others.
  • Experience with Trimble handheld GIS based data collection.
  • Ability to quickly qualify at a Principal Investigator’s level for either Wyoming or New Mexico state and federal archaeological permits.
  • Knowledge and experience in the High Plains and Great Basin prehistory and/or history (Wyoming),or Southwestern Prehistory and/or history (New Mexico).
  • Competent knowledge of archaeological methods and theory, and applicable federal, state and local regulations and compliance requirements
  • Experience successfully directing all phases of cultural resource investigation.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and orally.
  • Provide quality control for all deliverables.
  • Ability to travel out of town, possess a clean and valid driver’s license, and the ability to safely operate a UTV or four-wheel drive vehicle on backcountry roads.
  • Ability to generate, organize, and maintain accurate field records that meet state and federal standards and guidelines.

Wildlife Technician

Seasonal

Grouse Mountain is seeking field technicians to support their Buffalo, WY, field office during spring/summer 2026. Buffalo is located at the base of the Bighorn Mountains. Field work will include conducting greater sage-grouse lek counts and searches (ground and aerial), raptor nest searches, raptor nesting occupancy/productivity surveys, swift fox clearance surveys and nocturnal spotlight surveys, amphibian surveys, and migratory bird clearance surveys. Avian surveys will make up the bulk of fieldwork; however, surveys will also be conducted for other sensitive plants/animal species and wetland habitats. Post-field data management will involve following company-specific protocols to ensure complete and consistent data. Strong attention to detail is necessary. Travel is a large part of the position. The individual will be stationed out of Buffalo, WY, but may conduct surveys throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Previous experience conducting avian surveys within the western region is preferred. Limited housing may be available on a first-come basis; otherwise, a housing stipend will be provided.

Positions would start in late March to early April and last through summer 2026.

Location: Buffalo, WY

Salary: $20-24/hr

Qualifications

  • BS in wildlife biology-related field
  • Previous experience conducting avian surveys
  • Extensive experience identifying avian species in the western region
  • Individuals must be in good physical condition, capable of hiking long distances through variable terrain
  • Experience operating off-road vehicles, hauling trailers, and navigating through remote areas
  • Comfortable working independently and conducting surveys in extreme temperatures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting raptor nesting/breeding surveys
  • Experience conducting surveys for other species of concern, sensitive species, and T&E species within the western region
  • Experience conducting avian point counts and migratory bird surveys
  • Experience operating GPS, such as Field Maps or Collector, as well as Microsoft software
